I photographed an urban area near Maryhill in Glasgow. This area is approximately three acres in which there are three roads but no housing where it should have been. The area “Maryhill Valley” was demolished in 2005 and has never been regenerated since then. At the time of photographing the area, thick fog had set in over Glasgow and in doing so separated “the Valley” from it’s surroundings. I was able to record it’s elements of design and the physical remnants of its previous life in isolation. The snow on the ground only caused to create a silence almost as if a perfect capsule had been placed over the area. Central to this project is human geography and the relationship we have with our home areas- the idea of place, a place that once was, physical and emotion landscapes, which served a purpose and told a story that then vanishes into the past. I like the idea that I’m photographing something that doesn’t exist (the housing) and that the normal signs of day/night are not present in this project (it was shot at midday but it seems it’s not entirely obvious). The title “Sounds” refers not only to the actual silence when shooting it but also to the voices of the memories.
Artful photographic prints are produced to the highest standard, using Giclee printing on 300 gsm 100% cotton rag fine art paper. This method, accepted by the art world for fine art reproduction, produces a high quality, archival grade digital print. The archival quality of the pigment ink with 100% cotton rag minimises the chemical reaction leading to image fading.
Because Giclee is widely regarded as one of the very best photographic and fine art printing methods it has become extremely popular with artists and photographers displaying their images in art galleries, museums and exhibitions.
Artful is proud to offer a high quality framing service that perfectly compliments the artwork. Using conservation quality wood mouldings, our handmade frames are built for each individual print and arrive ready to hang. The archival quality mount is acid free and pH neutral, so you can be confident your print is well protected.
Artful’s framing service is not only competitively priced but of the highest quality. If you have any requests for further framing options, get in touch.
Artful uses UPS for its UK and international shipping since they’re quick, trustworthy and affordable.
As soon as your artwork is ready to be dispatched, we’ll notify you with the shipping details and tracking number. For UK delivery, shipping is ‘Next Working Day’ but for international, it will take a small while longer.

Armando Ferrari is an award winning photographer who learnt his craft at Edinburgh Napier University.
Armando’s stunning work captures something unexpected and contradictory. On the one hand, he makes ‘ugly’ urbanism into something beautiful, even sculptural. Industrial pollution, urban haze and a dust choked demolition become artistic inspiration, disconnected from their meaning as the viewer engages with form and colour.
But when the lense is turned on the natural world, something equally unexpected happens. Just as the ugly becomes beautiful, so the beautiful is sharpened into an edge. Flowers are pinned with needles; plants press against glass and autumnal trees feel chill and bare. With Armando’s work, things are rarely as they seem.
Armando has received numerous awards, including The Association of Photographers (AOP) awards in 2011 and 2012. His work was featured in the Creative Review Photo Annual, and “Best in book” in 2008.
