James studied Photography at Newcastle College, Newcastle upon Tyne. He graduated with huge critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year Award in 2009.

James has participated in the following exhibitions: Carlisle Photo Festival, Carlisle, 2013; “The Borders Project”, curated by Situation Rhubarb 2012; Sunderland Art Prize, curated by Departure Foundation 2012; Instituto Cervantes, Casablanca, part of the And'Art Residency curated by Terres Sans Frontiers, Morocco, 2012; “The Quire Exhibition”, Gallery Q, Sunderland, 2011; “In Pictures”, The Guardian, London, 2011 Group show of images published in the Guardian Magazine throughout 2011; The Print Space Gallery, 'RAW' exhibition, London, 2009 and most recently showcased his series of work from China in a solo exhibition “One in Five: Photographs from China”, Oriental Museum, Durham, 2012.

His commissioned work most recently includes illustrations for “Wildscapes in Children's Literature', Anna Jorgensen and Richard Keenan, Routledge Publishing, 2012.
